SriGeo is not an admissions agency. It is an information platform built to help students understand medical education in Georgia, the USMLE pathway, SLMC recognition, and what it takes to succeed as a medical student here.
The Case for Georgia
Georgia operates under the European Bologna Process and houses universities accredited by global bodies including the WHO and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. For the right student, with the right preparation, it offers a genuine pathway to a global medical career.
Georgian medical universities operate under the European Bologna Process, with credit-based curricula structured to meet international standards.
Several Georgian universities explicitly align curricula with USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 content. Students can begin targeted exam preparation alongside their formal studies from year one.
WHO listing, ECFMG/FAIMER recognition, and inclusion in the World Directory of Medical Schools β the credentials required to pursue licensing internationally.
Tuition and living costs combined remain a fraction of Western medical education. Specific tuition figures should be confirmed directly with each university.
A pathway exists for Sri Lankan students to return home and practise medicine through the SLMC-recognised programme. See SLMC section for current status.
Georgia's capital is consistently ranked among Europe's safest cities, with a thriving international student community and welcoming culture for South Asian students.
USMLE in Georgia
Many Sri Lankan students choose Georgia specifically because of the USMLE opportunity. Georgian medical degrees are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, making graduates eligible for ECFMG certification β the gateway to US residency. Here is how the integration works in practice.
The most successful Sri Lankan and international graduates from Georgian universities follow a longitudinal preparation strategy: integrating USMLE-aligned resources with formal coursework from the very beginning of medical school.
Basic sciences taught in years 1β3 (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology) map directly to Step 1 content. Clinical rotations in years 4β6 align with Step 2 CK. Students who begin First Aid, Anki, and UWorld during their preclinical years consistently outperform those who attempt USMLE preparation only after graduation.
The SriGeo Student Portal includes a structured topic-by-topic checklist for both Step 1 and Step 2 CK, organised by exam date, with progress tracking and a curated library of free preparation resources.

If a university you are interested in is not listed here, contact us β we will add it once verified.
Sri Lanka Recognition
For a Sri Lankan medical graduate to register and practise medicine in Sri Lanka, the medical degree must be from a university recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). Recognition is reviewed on a 5-year cycle. Below is the current position.
As of the current information available to SriGeo, Tbilisi State Medical University is the medical university in Georgia with active recognition from the Sri Lanka Medical Council. A graduate of TSMU's MD programme is eligible to apply to the SLMC for degree approval and subsequently sit the ERPM (Examination for Registration to Practise Medicine) β the licensing examination required to practise medicine in Sri Lanka.
SLMC recognition is granted for a 5-year period and must be renewed before expiry. Recognition status changes β sometimes mid-cycle. Other Georgian universities may also pursue SLMC recognition in future cycles. Before making any decision based on SLMC recognition, students should always verify the current status directly on the SLMC website.
Verify directly on the SLMC website βAfter completing an MD from an SLMC-recognised Georgian university, the route to practising in Sri Lanka follows a defined process administered by the SLMC and the Ministry of Health.
Verify the chosen university's recognition status directly on the SLMC website before applying. Confirm the recognition is current β not expired or pending renewal.
Including the mandatory clinical internship year. Maintain academic records and ensure all required documentation is preserved throughout.
Submit the degree, transcripts, internship documentation, and identity documents to the SLMC. The SLMC verifies authenticity directly with the university.
Once degree approval is granted, the graduate may apply to sit the ERPM. Passing the ERPM leads to provisional registration and the medical internship in Sri Lanka.
For the official SLMC procedure, see slmc.gov.lk β Study Abroad and Practice in Sri Lanka.
Inside the Curriculum
Understanding the structure of a Georgian medical curriculum β and how USMLE preparation and portfolio building integrate with it β is the difference between drifting through medical school and graduating prepared for a global career.
Cell biology, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, medical physics. Many Georgian curricula integrate basic and clinical science from year one. This is where the foundation for USMLE Step 1 begins β Anki, First Aid familiarisation, and structured study habits matter from the start.
Organ system physiology, immunology, microbiology, and introductory pathology. These subjects form the largest share of USMLE Step 1 content. Resources such as Pathoma, Sketchy Micro, BRS Physiology, and First Aid become central study companions.
Integration of pathology with pharmacological management. OSCE assessments are introduced. The end of year 3 is a common target for completing USMLE Step 1. Portfolio documentation requirements typically begin.
Supervised clinical clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, and paediatrics in affiliated teaching hospitals. UWorld Step 2 CK preparation runs in parallel with clinical learning.
Psychiatry, neurology, emergency medicine, and electives. Step 2 CK examination is typically targeted for completion by the end of year 5. Research involvement, conference presentations, and publications strengthen residency applications.
The mandatory clinical internship in Georgian hospitals. ECFMG certification process for those targeting US residency. Portfolio finalisation, licensing exam strategy execution, and preparation for the next chapter β Sri Lanka, UK (PLAB), USA (Match), or Gulf.
A medical portfolio is a structured, ongoing record of clinical experiences, reflections, certifications, and professional development. Several Georgian universities require it as part of formal assessment. More importantly, it is a powerful asset for licensing applications, residency matching, and career advancement.
Documented patient encounters from clinical rotations with reflective notes on learning points and clinical reasoning.
Courses, workshops, conferences, and continuing professional development activities documented with completion certificates.
Conference abstracts, peer-reviewed papers, and poster presentations. Even one publication meaningfully strengthens an application.
Written reflections on clinical encounters, ethical considerations, and personal professional growth β a core competency in medical education.
Structured clinical examination results and feedback, demonstrating clinical competency progression year on year.
Evidence of Georgian language acquisition, patient communication skills, and cross-cultural competence.

About SriGeo
Medical Educator & Researcher
Tbilisi, Georgia
SriGeo is an independent educational platform created and maintained by Professor Dr. Tharaka Dunuwila β a Sri Lankan medical educator working at multiple universities in Tbilisi, Georgia. The platform exists to address a specific gap: the absence of an honest, comprehensive resource on medical education in Georgia, written from inside academia rather than from outside the country by commercial agencies.
Most websites promoting Georgian medical universities are admission funnels operated by recruitment agencies. They are designed to convert visitors into commission-generating enrolments. They do not explain how to actually succeed once a student arrives β what curriculum to expect, how to integrate USMLE preparation from year one, what a professional portfolio should contain, or what SLMC recognition actually means in practice.
SriGeo addresses these gaps directly. The site does not represent any single university, does not collect commissions, and does not promise admission outcomes. It exists to inform β and to provide structured study tools through the Student Portal that help prospective and current medical students navigate their education with clarity.
